FAQ

Can I join RACWI if I’m not published?

Yes! We welcome all who are interested in learning more about writing and illustrating for children.

Where and when do you meet?

Typically, we meet on the first Thursday of the month, with some exceptions, from September to June. We meet in person at Writers & Books or on zoom, depending on availability of our guest speaker. Paid members receive a newsletter with meeting details and zoom links.

Can I bring a guest?

As a potential new member, anyone can attend ONE COMPLIMENTARY MEETING to decide whether or not to join.

How does RACWI collaborate with BNCWI?

As a paid member, you will have access to the Buffalo-Niagara Children’s Writers and Illustrators newsletter and meeting opportunities. They meet once a month on Monday nights and also focus on craft.

I’m interested in self-publishing. Is RACWI a good fit for me?

RACWI focuses on improving craft through workshops, making connections with other creators, and traditional publishing information. We have a subgroup that meets separately to explore the self-publishing route.

Can RACWI help me market my book?

If you already have a book in printed form and are seeking help with promotion, please note that we are not a marketing opportunity, although some of our meetings do focus on the business side of creating books for children.

How is RACWI involved with the Rochester Children’s Book Festival?

RACWI members volunteer their time to support the RCBF in many ways. They assist festival organizers throughout the year and volunteer on festival weekend to set up the venue, greet the public, help authors and visitors navigate the event, and assist in the craft areas. Please note, membership in RACWI does not guarantee participation as an author or illustrator in the festival. For all festival inquiries, please contact the RCBF.

What is Festival to Go?

Led by Vivian Vandevelde, RACWI members volunteer to read and give presentations to students in the Rochester City School District through this RCBF literary outreach program.
